 "Cast-Iron Doesn't Peel" 2010-04-19
By D. Vogel (Newport Beach, CA)
Dear Consumer,

I will try to be as unbiased as possible in writing this review to be as fair as possible to Mr. Barb-B-Q.

The wok arrived in one day, which was great. I was impressed by its weight and solid structure. I did however notice a 2x4 inch raised ridge (defect) along the bottom of the inside cooking surface. I thought nothing of it and figured it wouldn't effect the cooking.

As directions said, I applied a thin layer of vegetable oil to the whole pan and baked it for 350 in the oven. I wanted to get another coat on so I used peanut oil this time to help get the desired flavor seasoned into the pan. The second time it came out uneven. After cooking on it and then lightly washing it, I placed it on the stove to dry by heat and applied another coat of oil. This is where everything went wrong.

The inside surface begun to crack, blister up, and peel off. The more and more I tried to gently reseason it, the worse it got until there were actually potholes on the bottom surface revealing bright shiny metal underneath. It is my understanding that cast-iron does not do this. It is my understanding also, that cast iron is very durable and would not crack or peel like this.

When calling Mr. bbq customer service, they assured me that all their woks are made with 100% cast-iron. I am now thinking that their manufacturer in China plaid Chinese joke on me by covering up a defective wok surface with some sort of black polish.

Bottom line is, if you are worried about products that come out of China, I might think twice as I did about getting a replacement from this company. Who knows what type of chemical coating I ingested. At least I only did it once.

 "Great deal!!" 2010-04-19
By WhippinYoLegs (Outside DC)
Cheaper than the lodge, it's wide, flat bottomed, and I only heated it with some bacon grease for about an hour and then rubbed it with steel wool to prep it. Save your money, buy this one instead.

"curved inside and flat bottom..." 2010-04-12
By H. Montague
I have a steel wok and also wanted a cast iron wok. This wok is da bomb. I cook on a gas stove and the bottom of this wok is a perfect fit. Curved on the inside and flat on the bottom. Heats evenly and is virtually non-stick. I seasoned it on the stove top and in the oven...I used peanut oil and shortening. I cook asian food a lot and use this wok many times a week. This wok is everything I hoped it would be.

"poorly constructed - I should have listened to the reviews..." 2010-03-29
By C. Knight (illinois)
For home stir-fry (and frying, too) a cast iron wok is the best way to go, but not with the Mr. BBQ wok!

Mine didn't come cracked - but it was missing the black cast-iron texturing in a big 2 X 2" spot (at the bottom of the pan where most of the cooking is done), so there was a smooth, shiny metallic spot that probably wouldn't be able to build up the cast-iron "patina". The shoddy craftmanship and Chinese origin also turned me off for another reason: I knew that every time I cooked I would worry that I was poisoning my family with heavy metals...

I sent Mr BBQ back (which is very easy with amazon) and got a pro-logic cast iron wok that was preseasoned (for only $20 more!). I would recommend you spend a little extra $ to get a better constructed cast iron wok and save the effort scrubbing and seasoning (the saved effort easily makes back the extra $). Cast-iron lasts forever (if it's well constructed!) so go ahead and spend a tiny bit extra to get one that isn't made in China.

got this wok for our middle son, the chef. He loves it. Got one initally that had a crack in it (was prepared for that, since other reviewers said that had happened to them). Amazon sent another one even before I returned the first. It was perfect. REALLY good product. Will probably get one for myself eventually.

 "GREAT WOK" 2010-02-07
By Alicia Ocanas (Texas)
This is my second wok I've purchased. The first one I gave to a close friend that had never seen a cast-iron wok and loved it!

If you treat it as instructed in the oven for an hour w/some oil, it'll cook stir-fry items wonderfully.

I love it and it doesn't compare w/the other kind of aluminum or similar material woks.

"Buy the Lodge wok instead!" 2010-02-01
By Garth R. Maletic (Madison, WI)
We ordered this piece after our old (Teflon-coated) wok bit the dust. We've been slowly moving away from teflon-coated products due to their toxic nature and this wok was to be the 3rd cast iron piece we own (we have two other skillets made by Lodge). It is clear why this wok is so cheap: the metal is uneven, the finish around the lip and handles is rough and uneven, and due to the fact that this product is made in China, we've learned that there is the possibility that the material is not 100% iron, as opposed to the Lodge items. All Lodge cast iron is made in the USA. Also, the bottom of the wok is NOT round (as you find in a traditional wok), so this item doesn't cook food the way a wok normally does.

We returned this to Amazon and got the Lodge cast iron wok instead, and it is well worth the price increase over the Mr. BBQ one! The material and finish is even and consistent, and there is clearly more quality control that goes into this product.

Go with Lodge, you won't be sorry.

"Best wok I could get for the outdoors." 2009-12-19
By Treasure Research Library (Brighton, Colorado)
If you need a wok for that camping trip or just for the home, this is the bad boy you should get. I have several woks but this one will be my front line unit for cooking at home or in the field. As an Army cook I could have used a unit ike this to feed the men in the field. If you need a wok, this is it.

 "oofta!" 2009-07-18
By Brandon Storkamp (St. Cloud, MN USA)
Very heavy! 12 pounds! This isn't a bad thing though. This cast iron wok spreads the heat evenly and is perfect for stir fry or anything else you would cook in a wok. The weight of the piece prevents it from sliding around when stiring food with both hands. Seasoning is required but its not hard and it is well worth it to season in after washing it for the first couple uses.

 "Good Pot" 2009-03-05
By Ronald E. Crutchfield (Dnever, CO)
This is the best all around cooking vessel that I own. It is far, far superior to my carbon steel unit. Be sure and remove ALL of the protective coating prior to using it. I used oven cleaner inside and out. Also, cure and recure and recure before cooking with it. Popping corn is a good start-up activity.

"A wonderful cast iron wok" 2009-03-04
By S. Nanjappan (Dallas, TX)
I received this wok a couple of days ago in good shape, no cracks or nothing. To confirm this I slowly striked the wok with wooden laddle and I was able to hear the lovely ringing sound. If it's cracked and hidden under the intial coating you will not hear any ringing sound.

I throughly cleaned the wok twice under hot water and detergent using a scrubber. And then I placed the wok for seasoning in the oven for 1 hr using a thin coat of oil as per the instruction. And then removed it and applied another coat of oil and reseason it again. During this process some weird smelling fumes came out but it gradually reduced during my second seasoning.

Cleaned the wok again under hot water and started to cook veggie & shrimp stir fry. The food turned out to be really good and I can say the difference in quality of the food between the thin wok I already have. Heats up evenly and nicely. I love this wok and it will be in my kitchen forever.

Here are some of the info about the wok.

1) Yes, cast iron wok's are heavy and this is not preseasoned.

2) Yes you will get the weird fumes when seasoning as other reviewer's told.

3) Its worth the money, you will not get a big & heavy wok for this price in any other chinese or indian store(with Amazon's 5 star service)

4) Yes, the wok heats up slowly and evenly.

5) Yes, it will be non sticky if its seasoned properly.

6) Yes, cast iron wok will rust if proper care is not taken.

 "No thanks Mr. Bar-B-Q" 2009-03-02
By Larry F. Crowell (Knoxville, TN USA)
I'm in the market for a cast iron wok. I've read all the reviews for both this product and the Lodge product. A big "No Thank You" to this one; I'll go with the Lodge product for more $$$. I've never had a piece of cast iron break and I cannot believe the number of people who have reported breakage with this one. My only conclusion is that it's cheap Chinese junk (and not the boat type) with very poor metallurgical properties. And who knows what kind of toxic oil they've put on it (maybe a waste product from the toothpaste factories). Anyone tested this product for Chinese lead? You just never know. I appreciate all of you people who have posted reviews.

 "SERIOUSLY PEOPLE/ 4-5 STARS/ ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" 2009-01-14
By George Zurich
This is my 1st Amazon Review and I'm trying to help here as many of your reviews have helped me. I bought this wok because I love cooking with cast iron and I'm cheap...most of the time, and like you I agonized over the reviews: broken, cracked, broken, broken, LOVED IT!!!!, almost vomited after using, Great Deal, etc.

My wok arrived unbroken unlike many of yours. This is CAST IRON, readers. Netflix can send flimsy plastic DVDs in paper envelopes by the MILLIONS and they don't break! 1 star.

I followed the wok's cleaning directions (hot soapy wash, bake in oven) just to see what happens when a novice is faced with cleaning/curing this item. I am currently writing this review in the dead of Winter with all of the doors open in my house because the machine oil smoke is SO RETCHED! This will NOT happen with the "expensive" Lodge wok. Your call. 1 star.

Here's what I would suggest if you do buy this wok. When it arrives, thump it with your finger or a wooden object. If it is not cracked, the wok will sound like a lovely bell. If it buzzes or thunks, stop here, return wok or throw away. Don't waste your time cleaning because it's cracked.

Take wok OUTSIDE and scour it with GOJO (or any mechanics hand cleaner which is a safe but powerful degreaser) and steel wool. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Repeat scouring with GOJO. Rinse. Repeat. Rinse. Bring wok inside. Wash in warm-hot, sudsy water. Rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat, rinse, dry wok. Place in cold oven. Heat oven on BAKE to 300-350 degrees (hope wok doesn't crack while slowly heating) and allow wok to bake for 30-60 min. YOU WILL STILL GET SOME HORRIBLE OIL SMOKE IN YOUR HOUSE but nothing involving an ER. 1 star.

After 30-60 minutes, turn oven off and let wok cool naturally inside oven. This will ONLY take several hours and allows the stresses inside the iron to gently subside so the wok won't tend to crack in the future. 1 star.

When wok is cool enough to handle, cure it as per the instructions but bacon drippings will cure it better than vegetable oil...my opinion after doing this for a long time. Vegetarians, the oil works fine it just takes longer to build up a nicely cured surface.

OR, you could just spend another $30-$40 and get a Lodge wok and begin cooking immediately. Finally, I am NOT associated in ANY WAY with Lodge, but if the Mr. BBQ ever fails me I will not hesitate to buy the Lodge next time. Good luck and happy cooking! 1-2 stars. 3 stars if you're lucky, cheap like me, and have all day to mess around.
