Very expensive wok set but I thought I would get the best. Couldn't have been more wrong. I don't know why they list it as 8 pieces since there are actually only 6, unless you count the 2 handles as individual pieces... The wooden handle was cracked when I received my purchase. The glass lid looks good from far away but upon closer inspection, the metal frame around it is extremely flimsy and mine came already bent. The lid is also extremely heavy, very thick glass. I could not get the CD to work. I tried using all the programs I have on my MAC and PC, no success. After I seasoned the wok, the metal turner just scrapes off the seasoning right off when you cook. Extremely disappointed with purchase. Joyce Chen, never again.

You can buy a carbon steel wok for around $30, so why spend so much more?



The wok body is heavy but not too heavy. Professional Chinese chefs generally prefer carbon steel, though some like cast iron. Having cooked on both, I like the responsiveness of carbon steel.



The size and shape of the wok are nicely suited for home use. I use it on a gas range and prefer having the flat-bottom style vs. using a wok ring, which raises the wok up away from the burner and lets the wok tip a bit more. (If you have an electric range, definitely choose a flat-bottom wok or else it can't get hot enough.)



Not visible in the photo are the concentric rings around the the outside, giving the wok at least the appearance of being made of spun (vs. stamped) steel.



The wood handles are beautiful, smooth maple - and are solidly attached to the body of the wok. The glass lid is a little too upscale for a wok - it seems to defy the peasant roots of the vessel. I would have been perfectly happy with a tall metal lid but don't have any real complaints about the glass one, though the thin metal rim looks like it might dent easily.



Reminders: Don't forget to season the wok before you use it. Wash with hot water, no soap. Dry on the stovetop to prevent rust.

I have wooden spoons, but bought this bamboo set when I purchased a new electric wok. They are just perfect for stir-fry, and won't scratch the non-stick surface of my wok. I really like the size and shape of the rice paddle, and I thought that would be one piece I wouldn't use. It is just right for serving rice. Best of all, they are dishwasher safe, which is not the case with most wooden spoons. So far so good!

I love this stir-fry set, though I have to say... I've NEVER used it for stir-frying! I've used it for just about everything else in the kitchen, though. Even the shorter rice paddle has come in handy for all sorts of things (it's fairly flat, so you can even use it like a spatula). Also... It's sooo cheap! I feel like I should order a few more sets, just in case. I've already gotten it for friends and family to throw into a Christmas stocking or to wrap up with a cookbook or pan. The best part: they are dishwasher safe! I've washed mine over and over and have never had a crack. Awesome product.

This cooked wonderful on our electric range! I was so nervous about spending this much on a pan, but it is well worth it. The first one we got went back as the "cookbook" is missing (the second one does not have one either!! So I'd not expect one!), the bottom had a ring of missing coating, and the inside was scratched. It was like it was used and sent back and repackaged to go back out. The new one looks fine (except not any little booklet like promised on the package). It does state to "season" it before use. I noticed people complaining of the coating coming off, we've not had that happen yet. Use warm, soapy water to wash, with a cloth or sponge, dry immediately and I think you should be good to go. As stated, it cooks wonderfully on the electric stove... Very happy with the results of my first meal (chicken Lo Mein) Homemade of course!

What a bargain ! We have used this over and over and has proved to be an essential cooking tool. We enjoy eating healthy foods and this Wok makes cooking a easy fun way to cook. Large capacity for just about any amount of people. Since there is only two in our household the deep oval design helps same mopney and cooks foods perfectly. Only using only Extra Virgin Olive oil for stir frying it makes cleanup basically a light soapy rinse out. It sits perfect on the stove and does not tilt to insure even cooking. We even bought another one and made a gift out it for another family member. For this price you will never be disappointed. It is a bargain. Read the directions for the curing process it only takes about 2 minutes. The recipe booklet is very basic but superb inexpensive recipes are on the net like the food channel web site. Eat healthy and watch your weight the easy way, cook in this Wok.

If you intend to use your wok for traditional high-heat cooking, don't get anything with a non-stick surface. At high heat, these non-stick surfaces can produce toxic fumes. They WILL also peel off over time, particularly if you use a traditional wok spatula. Get a traditional carbon steel wok, season it, don't use soap and it will last and last. I've had my carbon steel wok for over 20 years. Five years after purchasing, my non-stick wok is in the garbage.

The Wok Shop reviews seem to be a bit skewed.



Word of advice, be careful when ordering. You might not get what you paid for. I ordered the Wok set as a gift and ended up getting multiple woks but no lid. The spatula fell apart as well after the first time using it.



Fortunately, I was shipped (2) of this item so I do have a second spatula but who knows how long it will last. The Wok is not of an 18gauge standard as described.



Also, it took two weeks for delivery of items which was a bit disappointing when I was charged over $20 for shipping.





The obscure box of items showing up was a bit strange and frustrating especially when the vendor refused to resolve the matter. I definitely would not recommend Ms. Tan's company after a series of rather unprofessional emails that transpired while trying to resolve the items that were NOT shipped.

I have been using this wok for about a month. Seasoning the wok is easy. Just follow the directions included in with the wok. The Wok Shop also sends you an email with directions. Be aware that baking the oil covered work in the oven produces a lot of smoke and odor, so open the windows and get the fans going. After the seasoning, I followed the advice in the book Breath of a Wok and stir fried some pork fat with garlic, ginger, and green onions, then threw them away. This is said to remove any metallic taste. Food sticking to the wok has not been a problem. Although this is cast iron, it is a very thin cast iron... not like a cast iron frying pan at all. One has to be careful not bang it too hard or it may shatter.



The only problem for me has been getting the wok close enough to the burner flame. This isn't the wok's problem... it depends upon your type of stove. Using a wok ring on the gas burner grate raises the wok too high. There is no room for the wok ring on the stove if I remove the grate. So, I end up setting the wok directly on the burner grate, using one hand to hold it steady. It's awkward. I may eventually try a flat bottomed carbon steel wok as it would be more practical for my stove.



Other than that, it works great. It looks and feels like an authentic, rustic wok and it seasons easily. I just wish my stove were better suited to a round bottom wok. Consider the design of your stove burners before buying a round bottomed wok. They are traditional, but somewhat impractical on a western stove. Do not hesitate to call the Wok Shop ([...]) for advice about what wok is best for you. They are very helpful and will take time to talk with you. Happy wokking!

Good product, arrived in good shape and promptly shipped.

Included good instructions on seasoning the wok as well as some nice recipes. Shipped to Canada, no problems with Customs.

Only issue for me, which I knew up front, was the cost of shipping to Canada, which was as much as the wok set itself. I purchased it in spite of the shipping cost because that was the product I wanted and couldn't find anything comparable in price

even with high shipping costs.

I read everything I could about woks before purchasing this one. Everyone has a different opinion about material, size, heat source, etc.

I got this cast iron wok on the recommendation of a high school foreign exchange student from Fuzhou, China. Her mom uses one that is very similar.

This is definitely cast iron, but it weighs less than 3 lbs. I can hold it up by the handle with one finger. It came with some extra little goodies and that a surprise. Anyway, I seasoned it using the email I received as a guide. I used a Brillo pad to scour the whole thing and rinsed it in hot water. I used a thin layer of Crisco and baked it in my gas grill @ 350 degrees for 20 minutes. I let it cool and scrubbed it with a sponge in soapy hot water. I repeated these steps again. Then I coated it again and baked the wok @ 450 degrees for 20 minutes. My wok is now shiny black and nothing stick. The first meal I made was a simple chicken and vegetable stir-fry I got from a website. It came out excellent and every meal since then has also; even popcorn! Clean-up is hot water, soap, and a sponge. Couldn't be easier. Same for the spatula.

I have to confess now that I have a Whirlpool ceramic flat-top stove. After wok cooking on this stove over a dozen times using the wok and wok ring, I cannot detect any damage. I turn the largest element on high and go. I've also been using cast iron skillets on this stove top nearly everyday for 6 years and I really didn't think I could hurt it despite what I've read on the web about the dangers of doing so.

If I dropped and broke this wok today, I would have another one on order within 10 minutes. I will never be without one again.



Update: I have enjoyed cooking in this wok so much, I have invited friends and family to watch me cook in it and they have enjoy the results that come from it. I have ordered one for my son and his wife as an anniversary present and one for a friend as a birthday present because they wanted one so much.

I really wanted to love this wok, but I don't even like it. I too followed the seasoning instructions to the letter, was so very careful to heat and clean it multiple times before it's first use, keep it lightly oiled and it still rusts every time I use it. My food tastes like metallic fish, and no, I've only ever cooked chicken, beef, and vegetables in it. I believed I could keep it nice, despite some the negative reviews it got about rusting. But every time I take it out of the cabinet, there are new rust marks as well as black marks. I'm over trying to clean it and will probably need to buy a new wok.

The Wok is nice, light and works as intended. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars because it's not quite as easy to season as some would have you believe. While I'm no expert, the wok still sticks a bit on some things when using it after a good initial seasoning and many uses. I've researched and seen a few tutorials from experts but haven't reached quite the same non-stick I'm used to on cast iron.



1 Star deduction for time investment compared to a couple other brands my friends have tried and succeeded on. Maybe it's me or maybe it's because besides the first seasoning we're not on a gas top, but I feel these factors fit into the reduction.



Anyway, the wok seems well made, the lid was better than expected and it preforms magnificently for cooking.



I would recommend this and buy it again if required. Works great on our induction top.

This is a very sturdy carbon steel wok with a very light aluminum lid and a nice bamboo spatula.



I have had no problem with rust. The trick is to not scrub off/through the "seasoning" when cleaning. You just scrape it down with a bamboo utensil and maybe a paper towel. No dish washing liquid nor abrasive pads required! A wok is not meant to be cleaned in the same way as your stainless steel cookware.



It's a lot of fun cooking with this wok.



I will offer the following advice for the first-time wok user: Realize that your kitchen stove probably doesn't put out the BTUs that a commercial unit does, so don't over-fill the wok when cooking - You cannot make the big servings like your local Chinese restaurant does. For the same reason, there is really no reason to get any bigger wok for home use, unless of course you have commercial equipment at home.

Before buying this wok set, I read all the reviews on Amazon and was convinced that those who gave this product bad reviews did not handle the wok properly. In other words, I believed that via proper seasoning, this wok should work rather well. It turned out the opposite. I read the instruction information carefully, did the seasoning according to the instruction,and it only worked for a short while. Do you ever want to know how frustrating it is to wash the wok after each use(taking 3 times longer than washing a regular pan)? Do you ever want to know how frustrating it is to season the wok for 3 times after it rusts? Do you ever want to know how frustrating it is to call the customer service, only to find that the number is now an All-State number? Honestly, I'd say that this wok may work well for a short while. So if you feel prepared to embrace all the frustrations it may incur after the 3rd use, then go for it! Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone.

This is NOT junk! It is an old fashioned, not chemically treated carbon steel wok. By definition, carbon steel will rust if not thoroughly dried! Wash it, wipe it, let it sit in open air for ten minutes and it's fine. Use some common sense, folks! It will serve you beautifully for years if you just treat it properly.
