This wok worked great until my wife was using it to steam some bao zi and let the water run out. The excessive heat ruined the non-stick finish, and we replaced it with a stainless steel wok for a quarter of the price. Seasoned properly it is non-stick and we don't have to worry about the finish. Save your money and head to Walmart.

If you intend to use your wok for traditional high-heat cooking, don't get anything with a non-stick surface. At high heat, these non-stick surfaces can produce toxic fumes. They WILL also peel off over time, particularly if you use a traditional wok spatula. Get a traditional carbon steel wok, season it, don't use soap and it will last and last. I've had my carbon steel wok for over 20 years. Five years after purchasing, my non-stick wok is in the garbage.

I bought the same wok from bed bath and beyond. After only 1-2 times, the non-sticky coat started peeling and eventually came off completely. Unless you plan to do very simple stir-flying, I won't recommend this wok.

I purchased these utensils because of the fair price -- and fair it was! Nothing to complain about there. But I was anticipating the stir fry utensils designed in 1925 by the legendary James Joyce himself, since adopted in his homeland of China. (In Beijing there are numerous dumpling houses named for Mr. Joyce, including the aptly titled Joyce's House of Dumplings, which Mr. Joyce was said to have visited upon the initial Chinese publication of Finnegans Wake in 1983.)



Rice paddle: In Mr. Joyce's grand design there are seven prongs to ensure maximum paddling ability. In this awful version there are no prongs to be seen anywhere, and the paddling experience leaves much to be desired (such as prongs). Alternative uses include fly-swatting, Orangutan-hitting and slapping linoleum countertops to the rhythm of the Billy Joel classic, We Didn't Start the Fire.



Mixing spoon: Completely unrecognizable from the expected Joyce-designed version. Mixing spoon lacks all spoonlike qualities, including an ample curvature for scooping. This here is the worst of the set, and is in fact nothing more than a flat stick on which "Joyce Chen" is written. Dreadful. Alternative uses: Primitive ruler ('I am this many mixing spoons tall'), or if you own a dog, fetch.



Stir-fry spatula: The sole redeeming quality of the entire set is the single spacious slot built into the spatula which allows steam to escape when stir-frying delicious vegetables and meats. Alternative uses: Ineffective oar for a small boat.

These tools are very sleek, look beautiful, and are a pleasure to hold (no splintery wood; they feel smooth and almost silky). They work well on any of the nonstick pans I've used, and for folding rice out of the rice cooker too.



I've had other wooden tools as well as some bamboo tools, and the burnished bamboo is my absolute favorite.

Yes, as some other reviewers have mentioned, these tools have a funky smell. I would not mind it as much if I knew what it was. If it's something that naturally occurs when the bamboo is cured the way these tools are, and it's not in any way indicative of some chemical that's going to hurt me, then they just need to say so.



But I've used the rice paddles very frequently since I've gotten these tools just a few days ago, and they've been through the dishwasher, and I haven't had any kind of bad reaction to using them (and I'm usually pretty chemically sensitive), so I'm going to say I think this must be "a feature and not a bug."



I bought two sets, thinking the wok spatulas would be curved more to follow the curved shape of my round-bottomed wok and that I'd use two of them when cooking, one for each hand. They are curved slightly, but not as much as I'd expected for a wok spatula. Yes, I will use them, but they weren't what I expected. The spoons are your typical wooden spoons, except made of bamboo (which is wonderful), and they will serve for what I'd normally use them for.



But the rice paddles...I love these paddles! With their large surface, they are great for folding in ingredients like English peas in tuna and pasta salads, and I find them much easier on my arthritic hands than longer-handled spoons. I mix five-minute artisan bread dough manually using a spoon (pushing the flour into the dough to incorporate it all), and one of these paddles is perfect for that purpose. Also, they perfectly fit down inside a wide-mouth mason jar with just a little room to spare, which makes them extremely handy for my sprouting and fermenting exploits.



For the money, I'm glad I got these. They are definitely a lot nicer than your typical wooden spoon set and ought to last a long time.
