This is a very nice heavy wok. I recently bought a range with a 16000 BTU burner. This wok works great with it. (range hood that extracts fumes to the outside is a MUST) IMHO, if your burner is not > 10000 btu, most woks would be the same. It does rust easily, so care has to be taken as mention in other reviews. Seasoning it took a 1/2 hour to get it black at the surface bottom, but after many uses, nothing 'much' sticks. What ever that does stick easily gets brushed off with water and a scrubber. Just soak it while you are having dinner. Frying noodles (flat and wide rice noodles) was a challenge at first, but after a few uses, it does the job very well. A word of reminder, this wok + high heat = quick water evaporation. A tip would be to cover the wok if you want to maintain some water moisture in the food and turn down the flame towards the end of cooking. CONS: my wife doesn't like this wok since you have to work fast on it and she prefers the old Calphalon nonstick wok. Since we both cook different dishes, this wok does get quite a lot of mileage ever since I bought it. Mine came with wooden handles as well, and it looks better than pictures. The package came well packed and no damage was apparent.

I bought this bamboo set after considering various silicone alternatives, which are A) a lot more expensive, and B) pretty unattractive. I think when beauty marries function, that's the ideal combo. Super practical, easy on the eyes. Joyce Chen offers a good variety of utensils -- two spatulas, a spoon, tongs -- just what you really need. And these wont scratch your non-stick or your stainless. And perhaps most important, you get the utensils plus the holder (I got mine on sale) for about what you'd pay for one silicon very non-green tool. The whole thing doesn't take up much room, so you can park the holder handily by the stove. I was pleased with the purchase.

On the surface you might think these are "cheap". Nothing could be further from the truth. Each utensil is very sturdy and cleans up beautifully! The holder is very nice looking and also wipes clean easily with a damp cloth. These are a must for use with nonstick cookware. I wish it had a wisk with the set.

You can buy a carbon steel wok for around $30, so why spend so much more?



The wok body is heavy but not too heavy. Professional Chinese chefs generally prefer carbon steel, though some like cast iron. Having cooked on both, I like the responsiveness of carbon steel.



The size and shape of the wok are nicely suited for home use. I use it on a gas range and prefer having the flat-bottom style vs. using a wok ring, which raises the wok up away from the burner and lets the wok tip a bit more. (If you have an electric range, definitely choose a flat-bottom wok or else it can't get hot enough.)



Not visible in the photo are the concentric rings around the the outside, giving the wok at least the appearance of being made of spun (vs. stamped) steel.



The wood handles are beautiful, smooth maple - and are solidly attached to the body of the wok. The glass lid is a little too upscale for a wok - it seems to defy the peasant roots of the vessel. I would have been perfectly happy with a tall metal lid but don't have any real complaints about the glass one, though the thin metal rim looks like it might dent easily.



Reminders: Don't forget to season the wok before you use it. Wash with hot water, no soap. Dry on the stovetop to prevent rust.

I bought these mainly because I can't stand the feel of a wooden spoon after it's washed a few times. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me ... popsicle sticks, wooden spoons ... ugh.

I like this set. The wok is pretty standard, which is a good thing, and the set includes a nice compliment of pieces.



The most important part is the wok itself, and it is a good quality carbon steel wok that should last many years.



The cook book is a joke, but everything else is ok. The quality of the ladle and spatula isn't that great, but they are certainly usable. When you figure in what you will spend for a decent carbon steel wok and lid, you are basically getting the other items for free. I will probably wind up replacing them at some point but it's nice to have them now.

First off, this is a carbon steel wok so you do have to season it and keep it seasoned. I like that because I think it adds more traditional flavor to the food. The wok is very durable; I baked it in the oven for almost 10 minutes and the wood handles were still OK. =) The only thing that seems a little flimsy is the wok cover - but it's still OK. I use my wok everyday and I cook almost everything in it - I steam, fry, boil.. I've even made steamed desserts in it (Malaysian recipe). Love it!

Included good instructions on seasoning the wok as well as some nice recipes. Shipped to Canada, no problems with Customs.

Only issue for me, which I knew up front, was the cost of shipping to Canada, which was as much as the wok set itself. I purchased it in spite of the shipping cost because that was the product I wanted and couldn't find anything comparable in price

even with high shipping costs.

I read everything I could about woks before purchasing this one. Everyone has a different opinion about material, size, heat source, etc.

I got this cast iron wok on the recommendation of a high school foreign exchange student from Fuzhou, China. Her mom uses one that is very similar.

This is definitely cast iron, but it weighs less than 3 lbs. I can hold it up by the handle with one finger. It came with some extra little goodies and that a surprise. Anyway, I seasoned it using the email I received as a guide. I used a Brillo pad to scour the whole thing and rinsed it in hot water. I used a thin layer of Crisco and baked it in my gas grill @ 350 degrees for 20 minutes. I let it cool and scrubbed it with a sponge in soapy hot water. I repeated these steps again. Then I coated it again and baked the wok @ 450 degrees for 20 minutes. My wok is now shiny black and nothing stick. The first meal I made was a simple chicken and vegetable stir-fry I got from a website. It came out excellent and every meal since then has also; even popcorn! Clean-up is hot water, soap, and a sponge. Couldn't be easier. Same for the spatula.

I have to confess now that I have a Whirlpool ceramic flat-top stove. After wok cooking on this stove over a dozen times using the wok and wok ring, I cannot detect any damage. I turn the largest element on high and go. I've also been using cast iron skillets on this stove top nearly everyday for 6 years and I really didn't think I could hurt it despite what I've read on the web about the dangers of doing so.

If I dropped and broke this wok today, I would have another one on order within 10 minutes. I will never be without one again.



Update: I have enjoyed cooking in this wok so much, I have invited friends and family to watch me cook in it and they have enjoy the results that come from it. I have ordered one for my son and his wife as an anniversary present and one for a friend as a birthday present because they wanted one so much.

Can someone tell me how to properly season this wok? I tried putting the wok on medium flame, and using a paper towel drenched in oil to wipe all the inside surface of the wok, and then reduced the heat to low and cooked the wok for 15 mins, but the wok is still really sticky feeling, and the food sticks to it as well. Can someone help me puhleese?
