The first ring I ordered had one badly welded post (at the top ring). I exchanged it (thanks Amazon) and the second one was even worse... three posts badly aligned, two of them not even welded. Even if the workmanship had been perfect, the bottom ring did not fit over the burner ring on my electric stove top, and I also noticed that the wok would not sit level due to the ring being too smooth. I gave up and ordered one of the others (cheaper, holes versus the open design).

I'd been wanting one of these for ages, so was eager to try it out on the stove - but it was a disappointment in the end. It slides around a lot, so never feels particularly safe (although I guess to be fair this has as much to do with the stove as anything; others may have better luck with that aspect), and raises the wok too high above the flame for my purposes. I've found it's easier to balance the wok on the burner, and to use the wok ring as a stand on the table - for which purpose it works perfectly!

This is a nice, well made wok ring. It is much lighter weight than I had hoped and so isn't quite as steady on my stove - slides around a little. I think it would be better for a smaller wok but it's not really very stable with a 14" one. I will probably use it as a stand. I do like the design which allows for the flame to hit evenly on the entire bottom of the wok. It's make of polished stainless steel so is easy to clean when you slop something on it.

This thing rocks. I seasoned it in the oven just like the instructions said and it worked perfectly. I've been cooking on it for a month or so and it works great on my gas stove without the ring......sits in my jen air grate fine. I use the ring for setting the wok in while serving. cleans up nicely. I have cooked stir fry, fried rice and lo mein. All came out great. Highly recommend.

I've had my Lodge Dutch Oven for roughly two months now. There is nothing I can't do in it. From stewing meats/veggies on a slow burn for 5 or 6 hours to sauteing meats/veggies with meat/chicken stock on high to get done in 3 or 4 or 5 minutes.



True Test of this Dutch Oven: Set the heat to low. Add a touch of olive oil. Dump in two finely chopped garlic cloves. Stir...don't let burn---they will NOT burn....



Set the oven to high, with meats and veggies and such already in....now add your chopped garlic to be "cooked" for only a few seconds: STIR, QUICKLY.... for maybe 20 seconds. Pull pot off stove....keep stirring because pot is still blazing hot....keep stirring for another 40 or 50 seconds or so until pot loses a good deal of heat....



Garlic has still not burned.



So: You can do garlic on a very high heat; you can do garlic at a very low heat. As far as I'm concerned, there's not much more you need to know to know this Dutch Oven will do anything you want it to.



I give it 100 percent.

It was purchased to go with the 16 inch hand hammered carbon Pow Wok I puchased from The Wok Shop at the same time. It is pretty large and very sturdy. I love these wok spatulas--they feel like a long powerful extension of your hand, and the shape is perfect for the sides of woks, particularly the round bottomed woks.



BUT,yes, the wood will just pop out. DO THIS: either hammer the wood back in, further than the lathing allows, or turn it over and pound the wood into the metal on the ground. Either way the wood will grind in further than it is suppose to (the lathing) and never come back out. You might have a few wood splinters appear near the metal, but remove them and then mineral oil the wood and you are good to go...!

I used this wok about 5 times. It's now in a garbage. Not because it's bad, but because the coating is weak and not as effective as you'd imagine for non-stick.



The cleaning - on that piece of paper you see in the picture, it tells you that you're not supposed to use anything to wash it, but warm water. You're not even supposed to use soap to wash it. The problem is that things stick on this pan (and yes, it says non-stick on it). You have to scrub it off, but it's still pretty hard to get things off



The cooking - worked just fine and like any other woks. Since it's non-stick, you can't use anything higher than medium. If you do, things won't be pretty.



My personal experience:



Things were sticking on it so much that I ended up having to scrub it off with a sponge. I tried using the softer surface (not the "astro turf" side) and things are still sticking. Eventually when I get it off, it also takes part of the coating off. I heated it up a few more times and eventually my last attempt gave it bumps at the bottom of the pan.



The nice thing is that it comes with a wooden spatula and some recipes on that piece of paper. I guess you have things that you can use for a while, but the wok itself didn't last me long at all. I'm sure others may have better experience if they could actually follow the instruction of not using anything else to clean it, but water.

The other reviewer for this Typhoon wok, Roy, should be ashamed of his/herself for being so ignorant and for posting such an unqualified review. I recently acquired the 12" version of this wok and I will supplement this review once I have more experience with it. It is replacing a non-stick coated wok whose finish started flaking off into the food it was cooking, and after a bit of research, I learned that the traditional steel woks, properly cured, have very good non-stick properties that do not flake. I have given this review a five-star rating in order to balance out the unfair one-star rating given by the other reviewer.



The lacquer coating on Typhoon carbon steel woks is not meant to be a non-stick coating, it is meant to be a protective anti-rust coating during shipping and storage. The coating must be removed prior to use and then the wok must be seasoned or cured to make it non-stick and to keep it from rusting. This is true of all authentic/apparently authentic Asian non-stainless steel woks. Per Typhoon USA, here are the directions for what Roy should have done with his/her wok before using it and reviewing it, directions that are included with the wok when purchased and which Roy apparently decided to ignore before using his/her Typhoon:



CARE AND USE



IMPORTANT PREPARATION OF YOUR WOK FOR USE ON ANY HEAT SOURCE.



Typhoon carbon steel woks are coated in a special clear food safe lacquer to protect them in transit. This lacquer MUST be removed and the wok seasoned before the first use.



TO REMOVE THE LACQUER



1) Wash the wok and dry. Using a pad of kitchen paper wipe a little vegetable oil over the entire inside and outside surfaces.



Place the wok over a LOW heat setting and allow it to heat for approximately 15 minutes. DO NOT LEAVE THE WOK UNATTENDED AT ANY TIME DURING THIS HEATING PROCESS. REMOVE FROM THE HEAT IF THE WOK BEGINS TO SMOKE.



2) Carefully wipe the surfaces with a clean pad of kitchen paper to remove the oil and lacquer. Allow the wok to cool, then repeat the process to ensure all traces of the lacquer are removed.

Do not immerse the wok in cold water at any time to speed up the cooling process.



GLASS TOPPED HOBS - If, during the removal of the lacquer, any marks are left on the glass, these should be removed as soon as possible with recommended glass hob cleaner.



TO SEASON THE COOKING SURFACE



Wipe the inside of the wok with a little oil. Re-heat the wok over a medium heat setting until it is hot, but not smoking. Remove from the heat and allow to cool thoroughly.



The wok is now seasoned and ready for use. After a few uses an even darker coloured "patina" will build up on the inside surface. Do not attempt to clean this off as it assists in the easy release of cooked foods.



EDIT: After using this wok for over a year, I do recommend it. Make sure during the first three or four times you use it that you do not allow food to stick and burn or it can result in some partial removal of the baked-on patina that serves as a non-stick surface coating. It cooks fast and food you want to push to the sides to allow the center, bottom food to cook more thoroughly does stay put instead of sliding back down like it would with a traditional non-stick coated pan. I'd buy one of these again - it's a very good product.

All I want to say is that after one use that the wok's finish rubbed off while using a wooden spoon. After one washing the wok started to rust in the places the finish rubbed off. Absolutely poor quality. If I would have spit at the screen it would have been a rip off. Good luck to you if you decide not to listen to me;)
